Main Square and City Hall
The Main Square of Palencia is next to Mayor Street. The facades of the buildings are the most distinguished elements in the square. There is a monument in the middle of the square that was made in honour of Alonso Berruguete. The Saint Francisco Church is a little bit away from the square, but that doesn't make it lose its importance in this architectural ensemble.
Casino of Palencia
The Casino of Palencia was built in the 16th century. At the beginning there were some offices there, although a few years later, it was remodeled to open the Casino. It is located in the middle of Mayor Street, in a corssing also known as "cruce de los Cuatro Cantones".
The Main Theatre
The Main Theatre of Palencia was built at the beginning of the 19th century.
It looks so modern because it had to be rebuilt due to a fire in 1826. The only thing they could save was its walls. Apart from them, we can not remember any element that was there before this brutal fire took place. The Main Theatre had to be completely remodeled.
The Diputación Palace is a spectacular piece of architecture. It has a lot of charm, which becomes bigger at night with its marvelous lighting.
It was built at the beginning of the nineties and has a mix of Renaissance and Neoclassical styles, although it also has a few touches of the Baroque style, which makes this building be even more beautiful.
The Mayor Street is located in the middle of the city, it is the backbone of Palencia. Undoubtedly, every citizen and every tourist choose this street to go for a walk through the town centre, since most monuments are in the nearby area. Moreover, it is a vast commercial zone, as there are plenty of shops in this area.
IRON BRIDGE: It evokes the upper class height in Palencia at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. Río Carrión Hospital is connected to a huge sports zone by this bridge.
PUENTECILLAS: it is the eldest bridge of the city. Its origin is Roman, but it was remodeled in the 16th century and that is how it looks since then.
MAYOR BRIDGE: It was made with stone in the 16th century, although it was remodeled and extended at the end of the 18th century.
The "Mercado de Abastos" (Market) is located in the city centre, behind the Diputación Palace, and very close to Mayor Street. Its architecture is the typical architecture that was used to build this kind of markets: forged iron and big windows. This market is where everybody goes to buy products from the best vegetable gardens of Palencia.
Today this school has become a must-see for tourists in Palencia. It has a particular mosaic that we all admire when we go by this building. The Viscountess of Villandrando, Mrs Eduviges Sanz de Sedano y Monedero, ordered to build it. She was concerned about orphan girls and she made them to go to this school to learn how to be a governess.
Monte El Viejo
THE SMALL HOUSE: try its "porrón" with a snack (porrón = glass wine jar with a long tapered drinking spout)
THE BIG HOUSE: it was built in the 16th century and today it is a restaurant. There are sport areas nearby.
THE REFUGE: it is the most visited zone, where there is a bar-restaurant. There are also some swimming pools and a large picnic area.
NATURAL RESERVE OF DEERS: it is the most significant thing of Monte El Viejo. It is very easy to approach the deers, since they are not afraid of people.
